In detail

The Walnut Board is a checkerboard of walnut blocks set end grain up, 13 × 9 in, in deep, warm browns. The pattern of the blocks changes from one board to the next.

A groove runs around the top to catch the juices when you carve a roast chicken or slice a steak. The knife meets the wood with a soft thud, and end grain is kind to the edge.

When dinner is ready, turn it around and bring it to the table with bread, cheese and a knife. Wash it by hand, and oil it when it looks dry.

Looking after it

Care

  • Wash by hand with warm soapy water, rinse, then dry it standing on its edge. Never soak it and never put it in the dishwasher.
  • Rub it with food-safe mineral oil or board oil when it looks dry, about once a month, and let it soak in overnight.
  • Keep it away from the stove and from direct sun so the wood does not dry out and split.

Step by step

How to use it

  1. Set it on a flat, dry counter; a damp towel underneath keeps it from sliding.

  2. Carve meat with the groove facing up to catch the juices.

  3. After raw meat or fish, wash it right away with hot soapy water and dry it.

Questions

Before you order

Something else? Write to us from our contact page. We reply within 2 business days.

What does end grain mean?

The board is made of small walnut blocks set with the ends of the wood fibers facing up, which gives it the checkerboard look. Wood is gentler on a knife edge than metal, which is why this is the board we chop on.

How do I oil it?

When it looks dry, about once a month, rub in a little food-safe mineral oil or board oil with a folded cloth, let it soak in overnight, then wipe off what is left.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

No. Wash it by hand with warm soapy water, rinse it and dry it standing on its edge. Never soak it.

Is walnut a concern with nut allergies?

It can be. If you, or anyone you cook for, has a tree nut allergy, ask a doctor before using a walnut board.

How do shipping and returns work?

Shipping is included in the price; there is no separate delivery charge. Orders ship within 1 to 3 business days, then take 7 to 12 business days in transit, so allow about 8 to 15 business days from order confirmation. We deliver to the 50 US states and Washington, D.C. Import duties and customs fees are paid by us. If a carrier ever asks you for any, contact us and we will cover it in full. Unused items in their original condition and packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Because they touch food, pans, pots, lids, boards, bowls and utensils that have been used for cooking or food, and opened Coil Scrubbers, cannot be returned for a change of mind. A product that arrives defective, damaged or wrong, or shows a defect within those 30 days, is replaced or refunded, even if it has been used. A broken glass lid must not be mailed back: send us photos and we replace or refund it without a return. Return shipping for a change of mind is paid by the customer; we send the return address by e-mail, and it may be outside the United States. For a defective, damaged or wrong item, we pay it. You can cancel at no charge until your order ships.
